Actively monitoring your IT systems is one of those things like backups. Smart people do it, a lot of other people would benefit from doing it.
- http://sysmonblog.co.uk/ Blog about the issues, software and stuff associated with monitoring, alerting, reporting and more.
Other related sites are:
- http://www.monitortools.com/ - massive list of available software. Editors Pick seems to equal "paid for link", which is a shame, and it doesn't appear to have any actual reviews. Just the marketing blurb for each thing. And a LOT of them seem to be rather rubbish.
And some of the better bits of software for doing this stuff:
- munin. Logging and graphing of system metrics
- nagios. Seems the most commonly used in corporate land, and the most complicated to configure.
- zabbix Getting a lot of good press, relatively new, both open source and with commercial support.
- zenoss Heard mixed reviews about this one, but want to investigate it further as it sounds promising. A bit like Zabbix perhaps/
